Cuba Unplugged

Cuba Unplugged

I started fantasizing about Cuba over a year ago, my curiosity amplified by those who had already visited and returned with an experience that deeply contrasted the American perception of what it means to go to Cuba.  I guess we generally limit our view of the country to cigars, old cars, and colorful buildings.  I split my time between the bustling, more tourist-laden city of Havana and the sleepier, picturesque countryside of Vinales. Being back home now, I can say that Cuba offers many things, but most valuable is its way of life.

Any time I visit a new city, I expect...

TO BERET OR NOT TO BERET

TO BERET OR NOT TO BERET

During my usual daily skim of fashion blogs and articles, I stumbled across a feature that boasted the comeback of the wool beret for chilly weather, to which I said, “when did it ever go away?”

Trends.  They drive the cycle of fashion.  They essentially tell you what to wear, when you should wear it, and more importantly, when it’s no longer deemed cool to wear it.  So how do you deal with the emotional angst of proudly wearing an item long before it becomes popular, only to be lumped in with everyone else as “trendy” when it’s touted as...

Go Green!

Go Green!

I'm always scouting unique, interesting pieces to add to Pecola's collection of jewelry, apparel, and accessories.  And let's be honest, there's a lot to sift through with so many talented makers at our disposal here in Atlanta.  My most recent quest to find a brand that was a little bohemian, a little rock n' roll led me to Tori Green of Greener T Designs.

Though catching up with Tori isn't always easy due to her traveling pop-up (you gotta see how she pimped out an '83 Dodge Van), I was lucky enough to get a chance...

QUEEN B.

QUEEN B.

Bryanna Simpson is the girl that embodies the style that you think you have. It’s a pivotal moment when you meet her and realize “holy shit, I’ve been doing it wrong all this time.” Simple and effortless and cool, just like her jewelry and accessories line Be Good. I had a virtual sit down with her even though we live less than two miles from each other because we are both self-proclaimed weirdos. Let’s get into it:

DG:  How long have you been making jewelry, and when did you realize this was a “thing” for you?
B:  I started making...

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE

I first met Elisabeth “Joy” Cuttino-Vereen, owner of Little Miss Broke, at the Hipster Yard Sale back in April and bought what is now one of my favorite pieces in my closet. Known as the “Queen of Tomboy Vintage,” Joy is making a name for herself with a fun, unique collection of vintage sports-inspired pieces. We met up recently to chat and I knew she was a Pisces within the first ten minutes based on her warmth and willingness to open up about personal experiences, including her battle with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. There's also the...
